Players Of The Month: USPHL Elite / Southern Divisions

Forward: Jake Court, Florida Eels.

“54 on that goal.” “54 again.” “That one was from 54.” Scorekeepers heard this a lot from referees during the month of November at Florida Eels games – over and over again.

Court (‘00/Fort Myers, Fla.) racked up 28 points over the course of November’s nine games. It was all part of a 13-game point scoring streak he carried into December (where he made it 14 on Dec. 2).

Court is such a big playmaker and a guy who’s bought into the team success that he passed much more than scored in November, scoring just one hat trick (on Nov. 30, part of a six-point night) and eight total goals. That helped put him second in the Elite Division in assists at month’s end with 34.

The Eels are in a close battle for first in the Florida Division with the leading Tampa Bay Juniors, and the two will have their last pre-Christmas clash on Dec. 9.

Honorable Mention: Gage Dill, Florida Eels; Zachary Parker, Tampa Bay Juniors.

 

Defense: Kevin Holman, Tampa Bay Juniors.

The USPHL Elite is a goal-scorer’s league, so any time a team in that league can keep its goals against below 3, they’re doing a great job, and that is the case for the Florida Division-leading Tampa Bay squad.

They are just below 3 at 2.92 and Holman has been a big help both on that end and helping Tampa Bay stand as one of the eight teams in the league with more than 100 goals for through less than 30 games – and the leader, with 138.

Holman (‘01/Tampa, Fla.) finished November as the leading scorer among defensemen in the USPHL Elite with 23 points in 25 games, and he scored 10 of those points in the team’s seven games played during that month.

Honorable Mention: Andrew Lawrence, Atlanta Jr. Kings; Davis Smidt, Charlotte Rush.

 

Goal: Ross Jones, Hampton Roads Whalers.

A repeat selection here, Jones now has shutouts in two separate USPHL divisions. On Dec. 2, he played his first USPHL Premier game and stopped 18 shots for the doughnut.

In the USPHL Elite, the Whalers only played four games in the month of November, but in each of three outings, Jones was stellar.

Jones (‘00/London, Ont.) stopped 112 of 119 shots for a .941 save percentage in November, and in the one loss he suffered, he stopped 38 shots from an always talented Charlotte Rush team. The Rush and Whalers, of course, battled for the 2018 Elite Championship, won by the Whalers.

Even if Jones doesn’t return to the Elite Division, his .948 save percentage will stand as a number that will be extremely tough to beat. He currently has a .16 lead on the Rush’s Andrew Nogowski, and he also leads the Elite in goals against average (1.60).
