Week of Oct. 10
Congratulations to this week’s USPHL Premier South Region Players Of The Week, representing the Florida and Southeast Divisions.
Forward: Nick Kaye, Charleston Colonials
The Colonials, at 7-3 (.700 winning percentage) have a slight edge as the best new USPHL Premier team on their closest competition, the Fort Wayne Spacemen (.600). A big reason for this is scoring depth. All of the Colonials’ regular players have earned at least a point already, and it’s only early October. Out of the 18 skaters with points, 15 have scored at least one goal.
Kaye (‘01/Mount Pleasant, S.C.) had a three-goal, three-assist weekend for the Colonials, and improved to a 10-5-4-9 line for the season.
Defense: Francis Young-Menard, Carolina Jr. Hurricanes
The Jr. Hurricanes go into the second week of October holding a very slim lead in the Southeast Division. This has been helped by Young-Menard, a ‘00 out of St-Paul-d’Abbotsford, Que. His goal and assist against the Hampton Roads Whalers helped the Jr. Hurricanes get the Saturday win over the Whalers. Then, his hard-nosed defensive play was key to getting the sweep win on Sunday. Overall, Young-Menard has seven points in 10 games and is the Canes’ takeaways leader (96).
Goaltender: Jakub Kostelny, Florida Eels
The ‘00 who has represented Slovakia at the World Junior Championships has aced his USPHL Premier test thus far. He was 6-0 overall, and 2-0 over the past weekend against the Tampa Bay Juniors. He stopped 49 of 54 shots in the Gulf Coast Rivalry weekend.
