The Florida Eels Premier Team Win The Florida Division Regular Season Championship

Congratulations boys for an outstanding season. It was truly an amazing run. Many folks doubted the season would get off. But yes, it did. What was so incredulous that it took 44 games in our division to declare the Divisional champion. It all came down to yesterday’s game to determine the Champion. Now that is what makes the Florida Division so competitive.  Indeed, the Eels had to lay everything on the ice over the past week. They had a critical game against Tampa last Thursday and it was a must win. And indeed, the boys went to Tampa with one mission and that was to defeat Tampa. And that is what they did. The Eels won by a clear and convincing effort 8-3.

Despite that win their job was far from complete. In order to take 1st place in there Division they would have to hand a loss to their cross town rivals the Junior Blades and then once again defeat Tampa at home on Sunday. Downing the Blades was not an easy task. The Blades would be fighting to stay alive. That game would be one of the toughest all year. The Blades were facing elimination. Their entire season was on the line. If they lost Atlanta was in. The Blades came and threw everything at the Eels. It was a hard fought battle for every inch of ice and every shift was played like it was the last minute in the season. That game brought incredible notoriety to the USPHL and the Eels.  Here is how it played out:

The Blades scored 3 goals in the first period. It looked like they would be on their way to earning a playoff spot. But never count out the Eels. They took their experience and skill and regrouped and came storming back with 3 goals of their own  in the 2nd period to tie things up. The Eels scored to take the lead, but the Blades would not quit. They had life in them and wanted it bad. They scored their 4th to tie it all up ½ way through the 3rdperiod. It was a shooters duel from that point the game was up and down. But the Eels found life again and notched their 5th to regain the lead.

The Eels were hit with a penalty at the 19:23 mark of the 3rd period and the Blades were on a power play. Oh my God. If that wasn’t bad the Eels committed another infraction at 19:35 remaining and they were down by 2. The Blades pulled their goalie. It was 6 against 3. This is when it all happened. The Eels goalie Alex Caron took the puck, and we all know his puck handling skills and sent it 180 feet and scored. The place went wild. 500+ folks in the building and the roof went off. The Eels killed off the remaining time and went on to win. A huge effort. The clip went viral a “Goalie Goal”

Well, that was two wins needed but Tampa was very much in it and the Eels were tied for 1st. No question the Eels were spent. Every ounce of energies both mentally and physically were laid out in that game. Tampa on the other hand was well rested and poised to go. Again, many thought the Eels would not have anything left. But that was indeed very wrong. You have to remember winning first place was NOT the primary goal and mission of the Eels. It would be nice no question. But from day one of training camp, from each shift of each game from the beginning of the year to each showcase throughout the Hub and this past weekend it was all about the Big Picture. Keep our eyes on the big picture coach Frankie Scarpaci would echo” We all know the big picture – Nationals. It order to get there we have to win each game and that requires winning each shift take not shifts off. To be first on the fore-check, second on support, retrieve pucks drive hard to the net, no cheating for offense, play equally hard on the back check smothering and suffocating their team on defense…..” It is great we won the First Place in our Division but keep our eye on the big picture”  That precept kept us going.

Against Tampa rather than coming out flat we came out on fire. Coach Scarpaci knew his team had to establish their presence and score first. And that is what they did. They struck for the 1st 3 goals. But Tampa is a very good team with highly talented players who are fast and can score as well. They are extremely well coached and won’t quit. They came back to answer the Eels with 3 goals of their own in the 2nd period. Going into the 3rd period the Eels knew it was their time. This was their game. They have trained 3-5 hours every day from the beginning  of the year.  And they found the back of the net 2 more times to cradle the win! This was back stopped by another incredible performance by netminder Alex Caron.

Fabulous job guys we are so proud of you. It shows in their faces. Incredible season and more to come. Our job is not done says Coach Scarpaci. We have to keep our eye on the big picture. We will not take playoffs for granted. We play Atlanta. They are a solid club, and we need to come out with two wins. Back to work this week. The players will have Monday through Friday to prepare as playoffs start this Saturday and the Eels host them at the Fort Myers Skatium.

Congrats to Our Eels Elite Team Earning @nd Place in the Florida Division

Congrats to Our Eels Elite Team!!!!!!!!!

Congrats Goes Out to The Florida Eels Elite Team Finishing in Second Place in the Florida Division.

What an Incredible Season. This team has grown so much from its training camp in August. We have seen a team develop and mature from 28 individuals to a team. A solid group of boys who have grown into men. This is a unit that will rival any other Elite team in the USPHL and as good as a team as many Premier teams. It all started at training camp. Twenty-one days of the most grueling training 4-5 hours per day. Then we faced adversity overcoming the ever present Covid 19 threat and the ordeals of daily well-ness checks 10+ Covid test, and all the precautions that confronted us.

We had a tough schedule traveling to Atlanta twice and then to Charleston SC and 9 games in the HUB City. When other leagues and programs were on pause or canceled, we preserved. We played so many teams from Northeast, including New York, New Jersey New Hampshire and Massachusetts . Our guys learned what is the Next Level. Our players were from all across the USA Canada and Europe. These were and are bonds they will have for life. There is a certain uniqueness and mystique playing for the Eels. We integrate not just a USA Style of juniors but one that incorporates Western Canadian and Eastern Canadian play along with those from Western Europe and Russia.

Our focus from the very beginning was not to dwell on first or second place in the Florida Division. It was to focus on Player Development. The coaching staff wanted to make sure that we had 4 full lines of forwards and defense and solid goaltending across the team that would allow us to compete with and against any team in the Elite Division. We feel really good in what we have. Look at how we played in the last 2 months. We went 6-3 at the Hub City. We won some key games at the USPHL Showcase in Charleston SC. We took the Tampa Juniors to over time and time again and we were the first team to defeat the Tampa Juniors and snaped their undefeated streak. And most impressively we defeated them this past weekend to the capture the momentum going into the Playoffs.

Our guys are poised and ready for the Playoffs. They are some of the most dedicated and determined boys who ever played for the Eels. Each one of them feeds off one another. They demonstrate the unwavering commitment to advance to Nationals. They have shown us not simply by lip service but by their actions their commitment and will to win. They not only have been very prepared on the ice and in the gym, but they are dialed in on video and mentally set to take on Charleston. Way to go guys we are proud of everyone who sported an Eels Elite jersey this season as you all have had an integral part in the Elite team’s success

Florida Eels Premier Team Defeats the Jr Blades 6-4

We even saw a rare moment as the Eels goalie Alex Caron scored on a clearance.

Congrats guys

The Florida Eels Close Out The Hub City 8-0 for Premier and 6-3 for Elite

The Florida Eels Close Out The Hub City 8-0 for Premier and 6-3 for Elite

This was a Phenomenal Event during the Most Challenging Time in the History of the Sport. Thank you USPHL for Providing our Players with this Incredible Experience

The Hub City games are concluded, and it was a resounding success for the entire USPHL and specifically for the Florida Eels. Quite frankly, many folks doubted the USPHL would even get off this season. Not us with the league office. In fact, we started  our season right on target. We will completely finish our season 44 game schedule. That is  absolutely incredible! Richard Gallant had to vision, and he chartered this ship through turbulent waters indeed. In the face of 2020 – with unrest and Covid 19 shutdowns he found a way to allow our players to play hockey and realize their dreams and do it safely and with caution.

As a league office we looked in the face of 2020 and took action. We accomplished two incredible combines, while others canceled events. We helped our teams filled their rosters with maximum players. Unprecedented. We implemented the toughest Covid 19 protocols to protect our players and coaches, practicing with abundance of caution. We mandated covid testing of all teams on systematic and continuous basis. These measures had considerable cost to teams but as a league we were willing to pay the price if that was what it took to forge forward.  When hiccups occurred, we did not just canceled games, rather we caucused and discussed options and strategized and  we shifted and repositioned games, so the players and teams got to play –  always being  mindful that safety of our players and coaches was of paramount concern.

When states closed and things seemed dismal, Richard Gallant had the vision and foresight to come up with a solution. Let’s not accept a pause or cancelation of the season. He did not just theorize – he put action into the game plan. This required inordinate planning and time was against us, but he made it happen.  He created the Hub City Event. He did not just make it available to the NCDC teams. He opened it up across the board to the NCDC, Premier and Elite. He did not limit it to the Northeast, he made it available to the entire league be it California Midwest Florida and the Northeast.

An event that brought 30 NCDC,  Premier and Elite teams to Florida  that allowed us to continue our league. It was developed and crafted with the strictest of rules and protocols. It was not easy for players parents’ coaches and administrators. Oh no it was an incredible endeavor that required the emphatic cooperation and discipline of 600+ players, league personnel and officials from across the USA. It was the integration of a ½ dozen rinks, busses, vans, hotels and most of all  Saddlebrook resort . And the games went off seamlessly. As the new Commissioner Bob Turow joined on board, it was his job  to take the torch and run with it; to keep the ship on course. To oversee the arrival and departure of 600 players, the dozens of daily games, practices, meals, busses etc. of  daily  operations of the event. And that was a herculean effort to keep the cohesion of this event intact. Phenomenal.  Although the Hub City  was not a pure bubble it was akin as close as we could accomplish with the number of participants. Think about it 30 teams and 600 players playing in over 6 venues virtually every day.  Moreover, the league was able to host multiple all-star games that were showcased worldwide. For the Premier and Elite players this was the first time they had an All-Star event in over 10 years. And it was done right with all the trimmings.

For the Eels it was simply the best event we ever participated in. We been a member of the USPHL from the very beginning and that says a lot. The Premier team went 8-0  and the  Elite team went 6-3. Very impressive. The Eels competed against teams from New Jersey New Hampshire Connecticut  Maine Massachusetts California and New York. Where else could you get these types of games at one location.  It was the rich experience of playing so many quality teams. The funny thing is no body was focused on the notion that they were here because their states were on pause, it was all about playing hockey at the highest level. Everything was first class from the officials to the announcers and broadcast operations.  Never before have we played against such a wide variety of teams throughout the entire league. There were representatives  from virtually every Division in the USPHL.

Through this,  the Eels also competed in its two annual showcases. First in the Winter Showcase at Hertz Arena and second in the Charleston SC in games vs the Hampton Road Whalers, the Charlotte Rush the Carolina Hurricanes the Richmond Generals the Potomac Patriots while still competing against its Florida Division rivals the Florida Jr Blades the Tampa Juniors the Atlanta Madhatters and the Carolina Colonials

We thank the league for hosting the Hub City, for giving us this year of hockey. When the entire world was going through such turbulence and upheaval our players had so much to look forward to and experience the game they love. What an incredible job Thank you
