East Coast v West Coast: Junior Hockey Classic Eels vs. the Typhoon.

The Florida Eels Premier and Elite teams take on the Palm Beach Typhoon. Three seasons ago we had tremendous games against the teams in Palm Beach and we are excited about their return. It was the Hub City event last season that triggered the Northern Cyclones to field a new franchise in Palm Beach. They are the owners of the new organization. They loved what they saw and experienced in Florida and the other organizations and wanted to be part of this great culture in the Florida Division. We are equally excited about them joining our Florida Division. It consists of the Florida Eels, the Junior Blades, the Tampa Juniors, the Typhoon and the Atlanta Mad Hatters. We are expecting a return to the Division next season from the currently dormant South Carolina team.

The Typhoon owners have done a very good job in recruiting players. Their teams have full on each of its two teams: Premier and Elite. The Typhons are owned by a solid group the Flanagan’s. They are a very professional group and know how to recruit and develop players. Over the years the Northern Cyclones have had some very spirited games vs the Eels and have been extremely competitive.

In the Standings, Palm Beach sits in 3rd place in the Premier Division. They have played 9 games with 3 wins 5 losses and 1 OTL for 7 points. The Eels are in 2nd place having played only 6 games with 5 wins and 0 losses and 1 SOL for 11 points. The Eels are 4 points behind Tampa, but Tampa has played in 11 games. That is 25% of their season. This weekend games are indeed important to the Eels as they have a chance to tie Tampa and still have 3 games in hand. By the same token Palm Beach has a chance to gain some day light over their 4th place rivals the Jr Blades with 5 points and breathing down the Typhon’s neck. These are divisional games and very important in the standings.

On the Elite scoreboard, Tampa is also in 1st place having played 11 games with 7 wins and 4 losses for 14 points. The Eels are also in 2nd place with only 7 games played. They have 5 wins 2 losses for 10 points. Key 4 points out of 1st. In 3rd place are those pesky Blades who also have 5 wins but have 4 losses. So the Eels are looking to gain an edge here and tie Tampa. The Typhoon’s won just one game but it was a huge comeback win over the Jr Blades last Thursday. They came back for 4 goals. Palm Beach came storming back against the Mad Hatters a week earlier with 4 goals in the 3rd period but lost with only seconds remaining in regulation. They are not an easy team to play against. Just as the Blades who were stunned last Thursday.

This Friday both teams travel to Palm Beach Ice Zone for a double header. The Premier plays at 5:30 pm and the Elite immediately after around 7:40 pm. On Sunday the teams return home for a double header at the Skatium. Elite faces off at 10:30 am and the Premier squares off at 1:00 pm. Our guys are ready for action. Having been off last 2 weekends. We are very eager to get in some games. Our Eels teams are both ranked in the top 10 in the league. That is impressive. And the Premier team has been ranked number one in the Dan K Power Rankings.

No doubt we expect Palm Beach to lay everything on the line. These are key 4 points for both teams on the line. These are not easy to come by. The Eels would capture 1st and inch closer to take Tampa out of the lead in the Division. But Palm Beach needs breathing room. There is nothing more dangerous than a team fighting for survival. This is a program who wants it just as bad. On the same hand, our guys are very determined and hungry. Come join us for the upcoming weekend at the Skatium or on HockeyTV.

This weekend The Florida Eels Take on The Palm Beach Typhoon in a Home and Away Set

The Florida Eels Premier and Elite squads square off against their newest Florida rivals the Palm Beach Typhoon. It has been 3 years since Palm Beach fielded a junior program. They were then known as the Palm Beach Hawks. The new program in Palm Beach – the  Typhoon is an entirely new program under new ownership. We are, indeed, excited about them joining our Florida Division. It now consist of the Florida Eels, the Junior Blades, The Tampa Juniors, The Typhoon and the Atlanta Mad Hatters. There is also the dormant South Carolina team that will resurface next season.

The Typhoon owners have done a very good job in recruiting players. They have a full complement of players on each of its two teams: Premier and Elite. That was the significant flaw in the Palm Beach Hawks. Their coaches were not able to recruit full teams which caused it going defunct.

The Typhons are owned by a solid group the Flanagan’s. They are a very professional group and know how to recruit, train and advance players. They are the same owners as the Northern Cyclones in NH.

In the Standings Palm Beach sits in 3rd place in the Premier Division. They have played 9 games with 3 wins 5 losses and 1 OTL for 7 points.  The Eels are in 2nd place having played only 6 games with 5 wins and 0 losses and 1 SOL for 11 points. They have 5 wins 2 losses for 10 points. Key 4 points out of 1st.  In 3rd place are those pesky Blades who also have 5 wins but have 4 losses.  So the Eels are looking to gain and edge here and tie Tampa. That is all great but we need to focus our attention on the task at hand: The Palm Beach  Typhoon. Four games are on the line. All hands-on deck so to speak. Our guys are very determined and hungry. Come join us for the upcoming weekend at the Skatium or on HockeyTV.

These 3 boys come from the 2 Big States Texas and Alaska. They are examples of the breath and enormity of the Eels recruiting footprint. The Eels are expecting Big Things This Season From Them As Well

Al Evanyk 89

Birth Year: 2002

Hand/Position: Left Shot Defensemen

Hometown: Wylie, Texas

Height/Weight: 5’8” 152 lbs

Prior to joining the Eels, Al played at Richardson/Rockwall High School in Texas where he tallied 27 goals and 31 assists in 18 games played last season. He is a versatile player with a very solid skill base. He came in as a forward but was changed into a defenseman due to his vision with the puck and his calm nature on the blue line. A big part of the Eels Elite blue line, he has 1 Goal and 2 Assists in 4 games played so far this season. Al is a do it all defender, he has great gap control, can move the puck extremely well, and can jump into the offensive play. He has skills that as he develops will seemingly transfer to the college game.

Ben Allen 6

Birth Year: 2002

Hand/Position: Right Shot Forward

Hometown: Dallas, Texas

Height/Weight: 5’10” 160 lbs

Ben Allen is a versatile forward that has seen time both as a center and a wing so far this season. He has an extremely high hockey IQ that goes a long way in his game. Prior to coming to Florida, Allen played at Richardson/Rockwall High School where he combined for 19 goals and 18 assists in 14 games played and also played with the Dallas Penguins U18 team where in 28 games he posted 4 goals and 4 assists. Ben plays a gritty style of hockey that is sometimes hard to come by. He is not afraid to go into the corners and win puck battles. A true “do whatever it takes to win” mentality to his game. He currently has 1 goal in 3 games played so far this season. As Allen continues to develop his skill set along with his hockey IQ, he can blossom into a fine collegiate ice hockey student athlete.

Brier Books 18

Birth Year: 2004

Hand/Position: Left Shot Forward

Hometown: Soldotna, Alaska

Height/Weight: 6’1” 195 lbs

Number 18, Brier Books comes to the Florida Eels all the way from Alaska. Last season he played for Team Alaska’s U15AAA team where he recorded 6 goals and 9 assists in 43 games played. He plays a very physical game for the Eels and has a team first mentality. So far this season he has recorded 1 goal in 5 games played. Another versatile forward for the Eels, Books has seen time as both a center and a winger in the lineup where he has made an impact in both of those positions. Books is quickly becoming an everyday player for the Eels this season and as he continues to develop his hockey IQ he will be sure to be an everyday player for a university in the future.

 Dan K’s Highlighter Players

October 6, 2021

2021 USPHL Raleigh Showcase

What is a highlighter player you make ask? Simply put, these players listed below are athletes that stand out beyond the stat sheet, put in the extra effort and stand out for all the right reasons on ice level.  The below won’t always be your league leader, your point-getter or even the skater with the “C” on their chest; but you can rest assured these are the select skaters you want on your team.

At The Dan K Show, we pride ourselves on our ability to help scouts throughout the country find their diamond in the rough; we hope this segment will do just that.  If you think you or someone you know is a Highlighter Player, reach out a www.dankshow.com/contact.

PREMIER:

Damon Kiyawasew (2002) – C – Florida Eels

Kiyawasew skates by defenseman like they are standing still.  The Eels product, is a great stick-handler, a speedster and a forward that helps spread the ice for coach Frankie Scarpaci.  Where Damon shines is putting pressure on the defense with his breakout ability, making zone presence a taller task for opposing squads.  This a Carl Hagelin-esque playing mentality, that if employed properly can turn a title pretender into a title contender.  (I tried to the tell the New York Rangers this regarding Hagelin but they wouldn’t listen!)

Alexandre Caron (2001) – G – Florida Eels

There is not a better goaltender on the planet right now in my opinion.  Alexandre “The Great” Caron, is the most underrated netminder playing in any rink nationwide at this moment.  He stops everything that moves, skates well, can play the puck as a 6th man, kills the forecheck and just doesn’t give up easy goals.  His performance in last year’s postseason nearly helped lift the National Championship trophy for his Eels in the 20-21 season.  Crazy enough, Caron’s biggest competition for netminder of the year thus far is in his own locker room, Duncan Rolleman.  Combined, Caron and Rolleman have allowed just 6 goals on 155 shots faced.  Scouts should be going through an American Ninja Warrior style set of challenges just to get a chance, to have Caron in net for their squad!

Spotlight On Florida Eels Elite Players

Justin Colton 2003 Rookie. Right Shot Defensemen from Parkland, FL, Florida He is 5’10 165 lbs.

Prior to joining the Florida Eels he played high school hockey and Tier I AAA where he scored 34 goals and 43 assists. He is a solid player with outstanding skill set.  He generally played forward but transferred to to Defense with the Eels. He no doubt is gifted with the puck, has excellent control, very high hockey IQ. Has made the transition very well. A significant part of the Eels success this season. In just 6 games he garnered 2 goals and 3 helpers. He has explosive seed and works well converting the rush out of the zone. Dead accurate on the offensive blueline. Justin is a first line power play guy. Strong college prospect. We expect his to be close to a point per game. No doubt will ripen into a league all-star.

Andrew Ward. 2004 Rookie Left Shoot Forward from Fort Myers Florida. He is 6’2 190 lbs.

Prior to joining the Eels Elite team, he played high school and youth hockey. The trained all summer with                 series. The Eels coaches were indeed impressed with his skill set and fortitude. In 5 games this season he has 3 goals and 5 assists for 8 points. He works extremely hard at practice and his off- ice work ethic and conditioning is phenomenal.  He is a first line power play guy. This young man has the ability to go the distance. NCAA Hockey. He is so young and has incredible upside. He could easily become Rookie of the year. He already is one the Eels Elite team’s impactful player.

Braeden Bzovey2003 Rookie Defensemen from Winnipeg Canada.  Right Shoot 5’11” 170 lbs.

He too was a forward converted to defense. Back home in Winnipeg, playing Tier I AAA he garnered 21 goals and 32 assists. He obviously can move the puck. Excellent skill set. Outstanding skater with quick acceleration up ice. He is a difference maker. He sees the ice very well. Great vision. He quarterbacks to top line power play and key on the PK. He has tremendous hockey sense. Great work ethic. Outstanding team guy. He is a solid NCAA College prospect. He has so much upside. In his short season of 7 games  he already has 2 goals and 3 assists.
