USPHL Premier: Highlights from Day 4 at the USPHL South Showcase

The penultimate day of action at the USPHL South Showcase, sponsored by Ice Industries, took place Sunday. Another seven USPHL Premier Division contests took place. Listed below are highlights of the day in the order they took place

Jr. Hurricanes 6, Junior Blades 2

The Jr. Hurricanes were fully awake in this early morning match, breaking a 1-1 deadlock with three unanswered middle period scores and adding a 2-1 edge in the third.

Alex Nilsson (‘00/Munkfors, Sweden) and Bryce Pierce (‘00/Franklin, Tenn.) both fired a pair in the win, Pierce also adding an assist.

Eels 4, Rockets 2

Heavily outshot, the Eels relied somewhat on a standout performance in goal from Jakub Kostelny (‘99/Trencin, Slovakia) who stopped 38 of 40 to lead his team to its second win of the weekend.

The Eels went up 2-0 in the first period, both teams adding singles in the second and third periods.

Makskim Tereschenko (‘01/Moscow, Russia) scored twice for the Eels.

Whalers 3, Juniors 1

After a scoreless opening period, the Hampton Roads Whalers fired three unanswered second period goals which held up as more than enough for the win against Tampa Bay Juniors.

Defenseman Daniel Duncan (‘99/Gainesville, Fla.) gave the Juniors a small consolation, snapping the shutout bid of Whalers;’ goaltender Greg Moon (‘99/Franklin, Mass.) just 49 seconds from the finish line.

Rockets 6, Blades 4

The New Jersey Rockets shrugged off a tough loss from earlier in the day and once again held a wide shots margin (36-14) against the Blades.

Rockets carried a 2-1 lead out of the opening period and scored the lone goal of the middle frame as well.

The Rockets had six different goal scorers in the contest, David Cicak (‘99/Cranford, N.J.) with the game winner and Holden Hertog (‘01/Fort Myers, Fla.) scored a pair for the Jr. Blades.

Juniors 3, Jr. Hurricanes 1

This nail biter wasn’t clinched until Tampa Junior Stanley Lucas (‘00/Edwardsville, Ill.) sank an empty netter with 27 seconds to go as Tampa held on to a 2-1 cushion since halfway through the second after Joseph Blanchard (‘01/Delano, Minn.) scored the goal that stood up as the game winner.

Generals 3, Eels 2

The Richmond Generals grabbed control of its final game at the Showcase, scoring three goals in 5:29 to carry a 3-0 lead out of the first period.

The Eels collected one just before the halftime break, then added another late in the middle period but could get no closer as teams played through a scoreless third.

Alex Cudd (‘00/Silver Spring, Mo.) fired the game winner late in the opening period for the Gens.

Whalers 7, Colonials 2

The Whalers once again worked quickly, scoring three goals in the first period before the Colonials notched one late in the frame. Whalers added another 3-1 advantage through the middle period and sank a single in the third.

Kyle Watson (00/Wakefield, England) paced the offense with two goals and two assists, with Brady Mistler (‘99/Lake Stevens, Wash.) scoring the game winner.
